“In September 2020, the EU Commission established that bamboo fibers are illegal to use in plastic. The decision is based on a technicality, caused by the fact that no European companies have applied to include bamboo on the EU positive list of approved substances to be used in food contact materials made of plastic. As the rules have not been changed as such, it is not possible to work within a transitional arrangement. This has led the Swedish authority to conclude that food contact materials made of plastic with added bamboo fibers are illegal.
What does this mean for Liewood's food contact products such as tableware?
Liewood takes full responsibility for the safety and quality of our food contact products, such as tableware. If it is verified that the release of chemical constituents from the product is above the health-based limit values (for instance, of formaldehyde or melamine), the products must be recalled. All Liewood products are tested, and we can therefore guarantee that we are far below the required limits. Therefore, none of our products need to be recalled from end consumers”, skriver Sandra Fry Smith, Customer Service Manager, i ett mejl till FoodMonitor.
